Sport and Active Leisure
Level 1 Diploma
This is a one year course designed to give students a recognised qualification in the field of sport and leisure. It provides the knowledge, skills and understanding required to progress to a First Diploma or other Level 2 qualification. It is a new course for those interested in working in a sport or leisure environment.

“I am enjoying the Sport First Diploma and I am surprised the course covers so much I didn’t expect!
As part of the Theory Body lesson we are learning about the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system and the muscles in the body, as well as the bones. I am also learning about how the body responds to exercise and this I find really interesting. My twice-weekly training sessions for Aldermaston Football Club seem more meaningful!
I am learning in all sorts of ways. At present, working with a partner, I am preparing a presentation on the respiratory system, which will be presented to the class. In addition each student takes a turn in planning and leading a practical lesson and I have planned mine. The session will start with a few minutes of warm-up (jogging and stretches), shooting practice, a short football match, followed by cool-down exercises.
I also carried out research into Basingstoke’s professional sports facilities, which I found interesting.
This year has given me the chance to improve my key skills, particularly my Maths. I intend to join the National Diploma course next year and go on to university with the long-term aim of teaching sport at secondary level.
I’m pleased I chose BCoT – it’s lots of fun. I enjoy the friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the lecturers are very helpful and supportive. The First Diploma is the first step towards my career goal.”
