Grant Thomson and David Shaw
  • Name: Grant Thomson and David Shaw
  • School: The Hurst Community College
  • Course: National Diploma in Media Production (Games Development)

“I wanted to get into games design and was delighted to find the Media ND course at BCoT having looked at colleges far and wide,” said Grant.

“I really enjoy the music lesson. Recently each student was given a piece of video and was asked to make their own soundtrack for it,” said David. “I am also enjoying producing a TV ident for the 2012 Olympic Games. My work includes lots of Olympic images and focuses on all things English as it’s being held here.”

“The course covers lots of information on the industry as well as soundtracks for the games, storytelling and different kinds of animation using software packages such as Flash,” said Grant. Both Grant and David agree the course is a lot of hard work and find the work challenging but achievable - consequently rewarding. They would highly recommend the course to anyone interested in games development but point out that students must be willing to work hard and accept the challenge!

David likes the environment at BCoT, appreciates the freedom of college and being treated as an adult. He also finds it convenient to be so near the town centre and enjoys meeting friends there.

Both students take advantage of the discount for bus passes.

On completion of the course, Grant and David intend to study games development at university and then work in the industry.

Tutor Comment

“BCoT has successfully run the Media (Games Development) ND for three years. The course covers every aspect of creating and getting a game ready for the market. Students need to be creative, as well as good at computing, to be suitable for this course.”
