 Charlotte Igo
  • Name: Charlotte Igo
  • School: John Hanson Community School
  • Course: National Diploma in Fashion & Clothing

The National Diploma is ideal for me as the 18 units cover everything I need to know about the fashion industry for my future career.

BCoT is just great! Everything is well organised and there is always someone to help me if I need it - the lecturers are brilliant. Everyone is friendly and I’ve made some really good friends. The facilities are excellent too and include pattern-cutting tables, sewing machines, a print room, weaving room and design room, as well as lots of mannequins and patterns. I’ve also learned to make my own patterns. Everything I need to study fashion is provided.

As part of the course we have had a few inspirational trips. We visited the Costume Gallery of the Victoria & Albert Museum to look at the history of fashion; the Natural History Museum for inspiration for natural structure for women’s wear and also spent time in Venice. To reflect the architecture and brickwork I saw while in Venice, I designed and made a leather belt. Another student has made a wavy puffball skirt to reflect the water.

I particularly enjoy sewing and have made lots of clothes on this course - my favourites being a high-waisted PVC skirt and a chiffon blouse. My final project is to make six garments for the end-of-year fashion show. The first-year students will model my garments.

Thanks to BCoT I am a lot more organised with my work and I am able to meet deadlines. I have been encouraged to continue my training and on completion of this course I hope to get a tailoring apprenticeship in women’s wear based in London. Once qualified, my ambition is to one day own my own women’s wear tailoring company.”
