Download Prospectus for School of Foundation Studies and ESOL

GCSE Grades E and below English for Speakers of Other Languages

An exciting programme for non-native speakers of English, practising all four language skills and focusing on ESOL Skills for Life. Tutorial and academic support are provided and learning takes place in a multi-cultural environment. Extra-curricular activities include International Evenings and visits to places of cultural interest.

Students use multi-media language learning as well as class settings. For students who have attained Entry 3 or above in ESOL it is possible to combine the course with a vocational programme and/or GCSE English, Maths or Science.

  • Name: Miranda Ramova
  • School: Country of origin: Macedonia
  • Course: ESOL

I knew that I needed to improve my English and BCoT offered me the opportunity to study full-time and to do other short courses.

When I first started, I didn’t speak very good English, but now it’s definitely better. Being at college full-time helped me to improve very quickly.

Studying at BCoT is very different from Macedonia and the approach here is much more informal. Eventually, I plan to do a Masters here in England in social work and to build on my life experience, before returning home to live and work.

On the ESOL course, we do both group work and individual work in classes to improve our listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. I have enjoyed my course. It has given me the opportunity to be creative as well and we have produced a newsletter and PowerPoint presentations.

The main difficulty for me has been the written work, but fortunately the tutors are there to help us at any time, even if you have language problems not connected to the college they will help you.

I am definitely more confident now when I speak with English people.
