I wanted to do practical work and BCoT is known as being a vocational college. I’d always wanted to do something hands-on and I thought that engineering would be the best option for me.

I didn’t have a career plan when I started the course and I came to the college with the aim of trying something out to see if I liked it.

Coming to BCoT has changed my ambitions as now I want to be a mechanical engineer and to use my skills as part of a well-paid job. I hope to go to university to get a degree in engineering, as the more qualifications you’ve got, the better job prospects you will have in the future.

I like the tutors at BCoT, they’re really nice. We’re also quite a small group and we’ve got really close. Being the only girl on my course, the guys look out for me and I’m made to feel part of the team.

I enjoy coming to college as I get to do practical things, day in, day out. Among the things we have produced are plumb bobs, clamps, pin punches and centre punches.

When I first started the course I did find it difficult to use the equipment and machines, but with the tutors’ help I managed to get over that hurdle. The tutors are really friendly and you get on well with all of them. They’re not strict and give you lots of support when you need it and get you focused on doing the work.

At college you have a lot more freedom and I find it’s a better place to learn than school, as you are not just sat in a classroom. English and maths are not my strong point, but my skills have improved here at BCoT.

To anyone considering this course, I would say definitely give it a try as it is really good and appeals to men and women!”
