  • Name: Tom Taylor
  • School: Cranbourne Business & Enterprise College
  • Course: Children’s Care Learning and Development. National Diploma

“I chose to study at BCoT after having a school visit and speaking to Connexions. I have always wanted to become a primary school teacher specialising in art and after looking at the course, the friendly environment and meeting the staff I couldn’t wait to start. However, I was a bit nervous about being the only male on the course, but when I started everyone was so friendly it just felt natural. I didn’t care what my mates said I just wanted to do the course”.

“I currently study three days a week at college and spend two days on work placements. I have really enjoyed getting ‘hands-on’ experience. So far I have worked at Manor Field Infant School and Noah’s Ark Pre-school where I learnt to communicate with staff and find out how things are run. It also made me more independent so I will know what to do when I get a job in this area. I am looking forward to a placement next year working with babies which will broaden my experience. Nurseries like having male students as it gives children a male influence and role model.”

“I am also on the Student Council at BCoT where we discuss college issues and relay these back to my classmates. There are many opportunities to do extra activities in the college which are greatly encouraged.

“On completion of my course I intend to go to university to become a primary school teacher.

“If I had to say one thing to encourage male students to attend the course it would be “Don’t be scared of what people say, just go for it.”
