Thanks to BCoT I feel like a different person and have lots more confidence in myself as well as in my artwork! “The prospectus appealed to me and a tour and taster day confirmed my choice of both college and course.
On joining the course I was intent on a career in fine art and becoming a painter. However, the National Diploma gave me wide experience in all the art disciplines, taught me lots of techniques and helped me choose another career path.
Some of the units were a challenge, particularly graphics. As I am not a neat person, I had to make a lot of effort to adjust but suddenly I found myself having fun. Some of the graphics processes have allowed me to develop skills in other areas.
I particularly enjoyed a trip to Madrid where we visited three art galleries. I had not been to many art galleries before and found it interesting. The trip was linked to a project and I produced a collage using mixed media.
I have chosen a career in children’s illustration – showing what a story is about through pictures. I prefer to work by hand but have had training using the AppleMacs too.
College is so different from school. The lecturers are good, treat you as adults and make time at BCoT fun. They are always there and willing to help if you need them, even if you don’t have a lesson. They see things in my work that I cannot and have opened my eyes.”
Next year Katy is going to Maidstone - University College for the Creative Arts, to study on a BA Illustration course.
